The aim of our group in doing
this project and producing this
website is none other then to
create awareness among the public of the offshore islands of Singapore. This
has been stressed throughout the course of doing this project, but what do
we actually mean by ‘create awareness’?
Initially, when we
first started out on this project, ‘create awareness’ meant that we had to
inform the public that Singapore has many other less known offshore islands,
not only Sentosa and Pulau Ubin, which are easily the most well-known.
Hence, we
administered a survey to find out which islands the public do not know of,
or have not visited, or are most interested to know of. This would help us
to narrow down the broad topic of Offshore Singapore. When the results came
back, we realised that although most of the people know that about Sentosa,
they do not know what attractions are on the island, with the new
developments coming fast and quick in recent years. We also found out that
many people have not visited Pulau Ubin. This proved that our assumption was
wrong and that people were also not very ‘aware’ of Sentosa and Pulau Ubin.
After finding out
which islands were accessible and the prices, combined with the survey
results, discussions were held and the group finally decided to concentrate
on 4 islands, mainly Sentosa, Pulau Ubin, Kusu Island and St John’s island,
all of which we were visiting. Although Sisters Island, Lazarus Island and
Pulau Hantu were also accessible via a launch from Clifford Pier, due to
financial constraints, we were unable to arrange trips to them.
Therefore, our
definition of ‘create awareness’ was greatly changed. Now, our aim was to
tell people about the history of Singapore’s offshore islands, what were on
the islands, and what the visitors thought about the island.
To do this, we had
to visit the islands, research on them, and write in-depth reports and
analysis to provide such information to the public.
Thus, we embarked
on a year of fun (visiting the islands) and hard work (writing the reports
and doing the website) and are now proud to present our second end product,
The Offshore Singapore Website.
